Looking for a quality win

Evansville went 11-21 last season and has not posted a winning record since 2017-18. This marks the fourth season under head coach David Ragland. The team’s top three players from last season departed via the transfer portal. Coming into this season, the Purple Aces are led by a pair of returning 6'10 big men in senior Connor Turnbull and junior Joshua Hughes.

This season, the Purple Aces are No. 280 in the KenPom ratings, ranking 260th in defensive efficiency and just 281st on offense. Turnbull leads the team with 14 ppg in 19 minutes per game. Hughes has also stepped up early, leading the team with 6.0 rebounds and adding 12.6 ppg in just under 27 minutes per game.

Evansville does not yet have a Division I win this season. They have lost to Purdue 82-51, Middle Tennessee 77-72, and UT Arlington 84-76. The wins have been over Calumet 92-50 and Oakland City 76-47.

Beavers have been excellent in tight games

After the Pac-12 collapsed, the Oregon State Beavers had to find a new conference last season. As a member of the West Coast Conference for the first time, they went 20-13 overall and 10-8 in league play last season.

To start this campaign, the Beavers opened with three tight wins, getting by North Dakota State 67-65, Illinois-Chicago 76-63, and North Texas 66-64.

Their first setback came Monday in an 87-75 loss at Oregon, though they did manage to cover the spread.

The Beavers are led by 6'2 junior guard Josiah Lake II, who has taken another step forward. He’s averaging 13 points and 5.3 rebounds while shooting 56% from the field.

Oregon State sits 136th in the KenPom ratings, checking in at 108th in adjusted offensive efficiency and 205th on defense.

Evansville has size with Turnbull and Hughes, but the overall athleticism just isn’t there, and their perimeter defense is going to have its hands full against Josiah Lake and a more battle-tested Oregon State squad. The Beavers should be locked in after the loss to Oregon, and this feels like a spot where they control the game and pull away.
