Hoosiers are off to a hot start under their new coach

Indiana (7-0 SU, 5-2 ATS, and 4-3 O/U) beat Bethune-Cookman 100-56 in its last game (Nov. 29), covering the 29-point spread. The Hoosiers shot 55 percent overall, including 39 from deep, and scored 48 points in the paint. They also outrebounded the Wildcats 43-29.

The Hoosiers were picked to finish 10th out of 18 teams in the Big Ten's preseason media poll. They are led by first-year coach Darian DeVries, who spent last season leading West Virginia to a 19-13 record and was a combined 150-55 in the previous six seasons coaching Drake. Indiana scores 89.6 points per game (87th) on 50.4 percent shooting (37th), including 37.8 percent from deep (54th). Defensively, they surrender 62.6 points per game (13th) on 36.3 percent shooting (10th), including 29.5 percent from long range (85th).

With ten transfers and five freshmen, there are a lot of new faces in Bloomington. IU raided several mid-major programs to build its 2025-26 roster, as only forwards Sam Alexis (Florida) and Tucker DeVries (West Virginia) came from Power-4 teams. The coach's son, DeVries, was the most impactful addition, as the senior forward is a five-year starter with career averages of 17.7 points and 5.6 rebounds with a 37.2% mark from three-point range. He's hit 44.1 percent of his treys this season despite taking 8.4 per game. The Hoosiers' starting rotation is pretty small, with an emphasis on ballhandlers who can score and push the basketball in transition. A few players to watch are senior guard Lamar Wilkerson (16.7 PPG this season), senior forward Sam Alexis (10.6 PPG and 6.4 RPG), and senior guard Tayton Connerway (11.9 PPG and 5.3 APG).

Minnesota is an average team on both ends of the court

Minnesota (4-4 SU, 2-6 ATS, and 3-5 O/U) lost 86-75 to Santa Clara in its previous game, failing to cover as five-point underdogs. The Gophers have lost and failed to cover in three straight games. Minnesota scores 73.5 points per game (307th) on 45.7 percent shooting (176th), including 31.0 percent from three-point range (275th). Its opponents average 68.5 points per game (57th) on 43.1 percent shooting (170th), including 38.5 percent from long distance (338th). The Golden Gophers rank 114th nationally, including 121st in adjusted offensive efficiency rating and 126th in adjusted defensive efficiency rating, per KenPom.

UM was 15-17 last season, with a 7-13 record in Big Ten play. They finished in a five-way tie for 12th place in the conference's regular season standings and lost to Northwestern in the first round of the B1G tourney. After the season, the school announced that it had fired head coach Ben Johnson, who compiled a 56-71 record in four seasons leading the team. With one winning season (19-15 two seasons ago) and zero NCAA Tournament appearances, Minnesota moved on from Johnson and hired Niko Medved, who previously coached at Furman, Drake, and Colorado State. He spent the past seven seasons at CSU, compiling a 143-85 record with three NCAA tourney selections.

Minnesota was picked to finish 16th out of 18 teams in the media's Big Ten preseason poll. The 2025-26 squad features 13 newcomers and two returning players, guard Isaac Asuma and forward Grayson Grove. Assuma averaged 5.6 points in 24.7 minutes per game as a freshman last season, while Grove redshirted. Senior guard Cade Tyson is off to a hot start to his UM career, averaging 22.4 points on 53.2 percent shooting and 35.9 percent from beyond the arc. He didn't see the court much last season at North Carolina, but he averaged 16.2 points and 5.9 rebounds with a 46.5% three-point mark two seasons ago at Belmont. A few other transfers expected to make an impact are junior forward Jaylen Crocker-Johnson (9.0 PPG and 4.4 RPG at Colorado State last season), senior guard Langston Reynolds (16.0 PPG, 5.6 RPG, and 3.4 APG at Northern Colorado), and senior forward Robert Vaihola (7.5 PPG, 7.5 RPG, and 1.4 BPG at San José State).

I don't expect this game to be competitive. The visitors are an effective three-point shooting team and will bury plenty of long-range shots against a Gophers defense that's 338th in three-point defense. The Hoosiers are also likely to get to the foul line often enough (Gophers rank 114th in opponent FT attempt rate), which they will take full advantage of (37th nationally in FT%). Minnesota lacks depth and enough offensive weapons to keep pace with Indiana. Tyson has been a productive first scoring option, but he's one of just two double-digit scorers on the roster. The Golden Gophers also lack momentum (three straight losses), while the Hoosiers are undefeated and well-rested.

Over/Under Pick for Indiana vs. Minnesota

• Under 142 (4 Units)

The Gophers will attempt to slow down the pace to keep the Hoosiers within reach, and while that won't help them cover the spread, it will keep the scoring to a minimum. Neither team boasts a significant rebounding advantage (both teams have a 55.2% total rebounding percentage), either. There will be some hot scoring stretches from the Hoosiers' side, especially if they knock down early three-balls, but that won't be enough to push the total over. Minnesota needs to get to the free-throw line to score, but Indiana ranks 69th nationally in opponent FT attempt rate. Considering that the Hoosiers rank in the top 30 in rim defense, the Gophers (31.0 3PT%) will need to hit plenty of threes to keep up on the scoreboard, which I don't expect to happen.
