Purdue vs Iowa prediction

Purdue vs Iowa picks are one of my favorite Big Ten betting angles on Saturday, because the number is short and the matchup is clear. I am attacking this game the same way I do my daily college basketball picks, and the main edge for Purdue comes down to efficiency and the possession battle.

Purdue vs Iowa Key Matchups and Handicap

Purdue

Purdue enters 20-4 overall and 10-3 in Big Ten play, and the identity is simple: this is an efficient offense that can score in different ways. The Boilermakers are shooting 50.3% from the field and 37.7% from three, and that type of efficiency travels well.

Even in games where the pace slows down, Purdue has a high floor because it does not need to force tempo to score. That is why I like Purdue laying a short number on the road.

The other major advantage for Purdue is the possession battle. Iowa’s season rebounding average is listed at 29.9 rebounds per game in the preview notes, which is near the bottom nationally. Against a bigger Purdue group, that is a dangerous recipe.

When Purdue controls the glass, it creates two edges at once. It generates second-chance points on offense, and it limits Iowa’s transition chances on the other end.

Iowa

Iowa is 18-6 overall and 8-5 in league play, and the Hawkeyes have been strong at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, sitting at 12-1 at home. That is the main reason this spread is tight.

Iowa’s offense is more guard-driven, and Bennett Stirtz is the engine. He is coming off a 32-point performance in the loss at Maryland, and he carries a massive creation load for this team.

The issue for Iowa is what happens after Stirtz. Iowa needs complementary scoring and it needs to survive the rebounding battle. If Purdue is able to keep Iowa to one shot, Stirtz will have to play nearly perfect basketball to win this game outright.

Injury-wise, Iowa is missing P. McCollum, who is out for the season with a foot injury. That matters because it shortens the backcourt rotation and raises fatigue risk if Stirtz is forced into another 38 to 40 minute workload.

There is also a note that Tavion Banks has been slowed at times by injuries. Iowa needs his secondary scoring and rebounding to keep Purdue from loading up defensively on Stirtz.

Overall, I respect Iowa’s home court, but Purdue’s shooting efficiency and rebounding edge are strong enough to overcome it.

  • Purdue is 20-4 overall and 10-3 in Big Ten play.
  • Iowa is 18-6 overall and 8-5 in Big Ten play.
  • Iowa is 12-1 at home at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
  • Purdue won the first meeting 79-72 on January 14.
  • Purdue is shooting 50.3% from the field.
  • Purdue is shooting 37.7% from three.
  • Iowa is listed at 29.9 rebounds per game in the preview notes.
  • The spread opened at Purdue -1.5 and has moved to Purdue -2.5.
  • The total opened at 141.5 and has moved to 142.5.
  • Purdue is taking the majority of public support at 82% of tickets and 80% of the handle.

Final Score Prediction

  • Projected Final Score: Purdue 76, Iowa 71

How to Bet

This is the type of game where I trust the team with the cleaner profile. Purdue shoots the ball better, and Purdue has a major edge in the possession battle if Iowa cannot rebound.

Iowa’s home record is strong, but Purdue already won the first meeting, and the matchup advantages are the same in this rematch. I am willing to lay the short number.

On the total, I am playing the over because Iowa’s offense runs through one high-usage star who can still push this game into the mid-70s, and Purdue’s efficiency gives it a high scoring floor even if the pace is not extreme.
