Spiders are coming off a disappointing defeat

Richmond (13-7 SU, 9-10 ATS, and 9-10 O/U) lost in the final seconds to Rhode Island in its previous game, falling 69-68. The Spiders shot 46 percent overall, including 36 percent from deep, but were outrebounded (-10 margin) and missed 8 of their 19 free throws. The Rams shot just 41 percent from the field and 15 percent from long range, but added 20 points at the foul line.

Richmond went 10-22 last season, including 5-13 in Atlantic 10 play. It was a disappointing result for a program that was 23-10 the previous season, capturing a share of the A-10 regular season title with a 15-3 conference record. The Spiders are led by coach Chris Mooney, who is in his 21st season at the helm (371-297 record). He has taken the team to three NCAA Tournaments, including a Sweet 16 appearance in 2011. Richmond was picked to finish tenth in the A-10's preseason poll this season.

The Spiders return three of their top five scorers, but lost their top two scorers: senior guard DeLonnie Hunt (15.8 PPG) and senior forward Dusan Neskovic (13.5 PPG). Mike Walz is the key returnee, as the senior center is averaging 7.2 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. A few other players to watch are senior guard AJ Lopez (12.6 PPG and a 41.4% three-point shooter), freshman guard Aiden Argabright (10.6 PPG and 1.4 SPG), and junior forward Jaden Daughtry (10.2 PPG and 3.5 RPG). Does George Washington have enough offense to cover the spread?

George Washington (12-7 SU, 10-8 ATS, and 10-8 O/U) lost 69-64 to George Mason on Monday, falling to 3-3 in A-10 games this season. The Revolutionaries, who have lost three of their last four games, shot 42 percent from the field and 32 percent from beyond the arc. They held their own on the boards and scored 32 points in the paint, but it wasn't enough to beat the 18-1 (6-0 in A-10 play) Patriots.

GW basketball finished 21-13 last season, including a 9-9 record in Atlantic 10 competition. The Revolutionaries are coached by former George Mason assistant and Miami (FL) assistant/associate HC Chris Caputo. The 45-year-old has compiled a 64-52 record (26-33 in A-10 play) in four seasons at the helm of the program. George Washington was predicted to finish fourth in the conference this season.

The Revolutionaries lost four rotation pieces from last season's squad, but return three key contributors. Their top returnee is leading scorer and rebounder Rafael Castro. The 6-foot-11 New Jersey native is scoring 16.5 points on 65.1 percent shooting with 8.7 rebounds per game. A few other players to watch against Richmond are junior forward Garrett Johnson (13.8 PPG and 4.3 RPG), junior guard Trey Autry (11.0 PPG, 3.4 RPG, and a 42.4% 3PT%), and sophomore guard Christian Jones (10.3 PPG and 3.2 APG). KenPom ranks George Washington 74th nationally, including 45th in offensive efficiency and 151st in defensive efficiency.

I like Richmond's side ATS. The Spiders rank 140th in consistency and 93rd in Haslametrics' Away from Home metrics, indicating they will be competitive in DC on Saturday. The Revolutionaries, meanwhile, enter this matchup ranked 300th in consistency and 332nd in momentum, including 340th in offensive momentum. While the home team should score at will when it gets the ball into the paint, the Spiders don't allow many near-proximity shots, forcing their opponents into threes. GWU shoots the three-ball pretty well, but it will certainly be tested by Richmond's stout perimeter defense (ranked 50th in opponent 3PT%).

The Revolutionaries should win straight-up, but I'm not certain they will win by at least nine points against their A-10 rival.

If the Spiders present a stiff challenge on the perimeter, the Revolutionaries could go through some cold stretches on offense. Richmond allows the 37th-lowest opponent near-proximity attempt rate and doesn't foul too often. George Washington will have to consistently knock down its threes to push Richmond into a higher-scoring game, which will be tough.

Both teams also enter Saturday's matchup with little scoring momentum, ranking 332nd and 334th nationally in offensive momentum. Richmond struggled at the free-throw line in its previous game, and George Washington shot under 40 percent from the floor in its last contest. Given this, I don't envision these squads scoring 75-80 points to push the total over 160.
