Providence vs St. John's Prediction

Rick Pitino’s St. John’s Red Storm (1-1) will host the William & Mary Tribe (2-1) at Carnesecca Arena on truTV. With St. John’s opening as a 28.5-point favorite, the biggest questions are how competitive the Tribe can be and whether they can cover.

William & Mary loves to run

William & Mary entered the season ranked 185th in Sports Illustrated’s preseason poll and fifth in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Tribe went 17-15 last season, including 11-7 in conference play.

The Tribe opened this season with a 110-63 win over Georgian Court before edging Norfolk State 81-78 last Saturday. In their last game on Tuesday, William & Mary lost to Richmond Spiders 90-86. In that game, they were outrebounded 53-36, and the Spiders also attempted 46 free throws, both troubling signs heading into a matchup with St. John’s.

Kyle Pulliam (13.7 ppg), Reese Miller (13.0 ppg), and Ryan Jackson Jr. (10.3 ppg) have led the scoring through three games. Pulliam and Jackson Jr. return from last season, while Miller joins after two years at Blinn Community College.

Loaded and built to win it all

Last season St. John’s went 31-5 and 18-2 in conference play and also won the Big East tournament. However, their national championship hopes ended in the second round, where they lost 75-66 to John Calipari’s Arkansas Razorbacks.

This season, Pitino’s squad enters as a national title contender, ranked No. 6 overall and No. 2 in the Big East by Sports Illustrated. After rolling Quinnipiac 108-74 in the opener, the Red Storm fell at Madison Square Garden last Saturday, losing to Alabama 103-96.

Leading the way is 6-foot-9 forward Zuby Ejiofor, now in his third season with St. John’s. He averaged 14.7 ppg and 8.1 rpg last season and has opened this year at 22.0 ppg and 8.0 rpg. A strong group of transfer additions includes Ian Jackson, a 6-foot-5 sophomore who scored 11.9 ppg at North Carolina; Bryce Hopkins, who averaged 17 ppg at Providence; and Dillon Mitchell, who scored 9.9 ppg at Cincinnati. It is one of the deepest and most talented rosters Pitino has coached at St. John’s.

William & Mary vs St. John's Predictions

ATS Pick for W&M vs. St. John's:

  • St. John’s -28.5 (5 units)

St. John’s ranks 22nd in adjusted offensive efficiency and 27th on defense, while William & Mary sits at 142nd offensively and 286th defensively. No matter how you look at it, this is a major mismatch.

The only concern when laying this number is whether St. John’s will have a letdown, but I don’t see it. The Red Storm are coming off a tough loss to Alabama and have had all week to hear from coach Pitino about it, so expect a focused effort.

When it comes to garage points late, St. John's has such a deep roster that even their bench should overwhelm what William & Mary can offer. I’m laying the points as St. John’s will roll.

Total Pick for William & Mary vs. St. John's:

  • Over 179.5 (4 units)

If you like scoring and a fast pace, this is the game to watch on Saturday. St. John’s ranks eighth in adjusted tempo, and William & Mary ranks sixth, so neither team will slow things down.

I would be surprised if St. John’s doesn’t reach the century mark. The question is how much William & Mary can contribute. I see something in the 108-75 range, so I’m taking the over.
