The Lafayette Leopards visit the UConn Huskies at Pratt & Whitney Stadium, with the opening kickoff at 12:00 PM ET, televised on UConn+. Lafayette finished 8-4 last season and went 6-1 in Patriot League play, with the Leopards picked fifth in the expanded conference entering 2026. UConn finished 9-4 for a second straight nine-win season, closing the regular season with four consecutive victories before a 41-16 bowl loss to Army. The Huskies opened as 18.5-point favorites and have moved to -19.5, while the total remains 58.5. UConn is -1100 on the moneyline, with Lafayette at +700. Saturday’s matchup offers a clear difference in roster depth for our free NCAAF picks.

Lafayette Leopards Adjust to Changes on Offense

Lafayette finished last season strongly despite losing 42-32 to Lehigh in the finale. Before that defeat, the Leopards beat Richmond 35-28, Colgate 59-42 and Holy Cross 21-13. Lafayette has won 23 games over the last three seasons, its highest three-year total since 1901-03. The Leopards were hit by transfer departures during the offseason and return five starters on offense and five on defense. Longtime starting quarterback Dean DeNobile departed for Florida State, creating an important change at the position.

Dan Lipovski won the quarterback job after beginning his college career at Delaware. The senior has experienced targets around him, led by Carson Persing, who caught 60 passes for 724 yards and four touchdowns last season. Mason Kuehner and Matthew Scerbo are also expected to start at receiver, while Sean Wilson returns at left tackle. Lafayette’s offense showed scoring ability late last year, reaching 32 points or more in three of its final five games, but Saturday presents a considerable jump in defensive talent.

UConn Huskies Begin the Jason Candle Era

UConn won nine games last season but underwent major changes after Jim Mora left for Colorado State. Former Toledo coach Jason Candle takes over after posting an 81-44 career record across ten seasons as a head coach. The Huskies also have a new offensive coordinator in Nunzio Campanile. Tucker McDonald, Kalieb Osborne and Jake Merklinger were among the quarterback options during the offseason, while the backfield was rebuilt with Kenji Christian, Cyncir Bowers and Trey Cornist. Christian ran for 528 yards and four touchdowns for Toledo last season.

UConn’s defense will also have a strong Toledo influence. Five defenders from Candle’s former program joined the Huskies, including linebacker K’Von Sherman, who recorded 94 tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks last season. John Lista added 78 tackles at Penn before transferring to UConn. The Huskies allowed 199.5 rushing yards per game last season, so improving against the run is a major priority. Candle’s Toledo defense ranked second nationally in total defense and fourth in scoring defense in 2025.

Key to the Game: UConn Defense vs Lafayette Offense

The matchup between UConn’s rebuilt defense and Lafayette’s offense should shape Saturday’s result. Lafayette has useful experience at receiver, especially with Persing coming off a 60-catch season, but Lipovski is replacing a multi-year starter at quarterback. UConn added several defenders familiar with Candle’s system, and Sherman provides proven production at linebacker. If the Huskies create pressure and prevent Lafayette from generating deep completions, the Leopards could struggle to match UConn’s scoring. Lafayette needs its returning offensive linemen to give Lipovski enough time to attack downfield.

Lafayette vs UConn Game Pick

  • UConn -19.5 (-105)

UConn has the roster depth and defensive pieces to separate from Lafayette, especially against an offense replacing longtime quarterback Dean DeNobile. The Huskies added proven defenders from Toledo, led by K’Von Sherman, while Lafayette returns five offensive starters. UConn also closed the 2025 regular season with four straight wins before its bowl loss. The 19.5-point spread asks for a comfortable margin, but the Huskies have the stronger personnel top to bottom. At home, the play is UConn -19.5 against Lafayette on Saturday afternoon at home.

Lafayette vs UConn Over/Under Pick

  • Under 58.5 (-110)

The total of 58.5 requires sustained scoring, and both offenses face major changes. UConn is installing a new system with a new coaching staff, several transfer linemen and a quarterback competition, while Lafayette replaced Dean DeNobile. The Huskies are also building their defense around transfers from a Toledo unit that ranked second nationally in total defense last season. Lafayette has experienced targets, but UConn should make scoring difficult. With uncertainty surrounding each offense, the play is under 58.5 at Pratt & Whitney Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
