New Mexico State Aggies vs Florida State Seminoles Picks, Prediction, Odds, and Line Movement for Saturday August 29 2026

By: Al MacMillan Published 08/29/2026, 03:00 AM ET

Tonight's New Mexico State Aggies vs Florida State Seminoles picks come with one of the largest talent gaps on Saturday's board and one of the most aggressive line moves. Florida State opened as roughly a four-touchdown favorite and has been pushed into the low 30s for the 7:00 p.m. ET kickoff at Doak Campbell Stadium. The Seminoles start Stanford and Auburn transfer Ashton Daniels at quarterback, while New Mexico State turns to Furman transfer Trey Hedden. The question is not whether Florida State should win, but whether the current spread has moved too far.

New Mexico State Aggies vs Florida State Seminoles Preview

Florida State enters 2026 under significant pressure after finishing 5-7 last season and missing a bowl for a second straight year. Mike Norvell has again used the transfer portal to reshape important parts of the roster. Daniels won the starting quarterback job after stops at Stanford and Auburn, and the Seminoles also added more experience to an offensive line that needs to become a strength rather than a recurring concern.

The offense should be able to lean heavily on the running game. Texas transfer Quintrevion Wisner adds proven ability to a backfield that also has speed around it, and Florida State has a major receiving threat in Duce Robinson. That is a difficult combination for a New Mexico State defense that does not have the same depth or individual matchup talent. If Florida State stays ahead of the sticks, the Seminoles should create scoring chances consistently.

New Mexico State's counter is experience. The Aggies finished 4-8 last season, but they return more established pieces than they did a year ago and have upgraded the roster in several areas. Hedden arrives from Furman to lead the offense, while receiver TK King gives him an established target. The offensive line also carries significant combined career starting experience across the FBS and FCS levels. That does not erase the talent gap, but it gives New Mexico State a better chance to avoid total offensive collapse.

The Aggies' biggest 2025 weakness was the running game. New Mexico State finished near the bottom of the national rushing rankings, producing only 761 rushing yards during the regular season. That is a serious problem against a Florida State defense that can create negative plays and force an opponent into predictable passing situations. Hedden needs enough early-down efficiency to keep the Aggies from facing constant third-and-long.

The spread is where the betting decision changes. Florida State opened around -28.5 and has been moved to -31.5, with some books offering New Mexico State +32.5. Moving through 30 and 31 is not trivial in a game where the favorite may begin substituting early. The Seminoles can dominate and still fail to cover a number above four touchdowns if the Aggies score once or twice after the game is decided.

Weather adds another reason to avoid paying the premium on the favorite. Tallahassee has a chance of showers and thunderstorms around the evening kickoff. Wind is not expected to be severe, but a delay, wet stretch or conservative second-half plan can reduce possessions. That matters much more to a favorite laying more than 30 than it does to the underdog.

Matchup Breakdown

Daniels' job is to prevent this game from becoming complicated. He does not need to chase explosive throws on every possession. Florida State can use the run game, play-action and field position to stress a New Mexico State defense that eventually has to tackle a deeper roster for four quarters. If Daniels protects the football, the Seminoles should create enough offensive efficiency to win comfortably.

New Mexico State needs Hedden and the offensive line to avoid drive-killing negative plays. The Aggies cannot ask their defense to repeatedly defend short fields. Even a handful of drives that cross midfield can matter enormously to the spread because one touchdown in each half forces Florida State to score into the mid-40s to cover a number above 32.

Florida State's receiving depth is also worth monitoring because Devin Carter is expected to miss time with a back injury. The Seminoles still have Robinson and other options, so the offense is not short-handed in a broad sense, but losing a receiver reduces some of the margin that comes with an enormous spread. This is another reason the favorite can play well without reaching the scoring ceiling implied by the market.

The biggest risk to the underdog is New Mexico State's run defense and offensive line failing simultaneously. If Florida State creates quick three-and-outs, then runs efficiently against a tired front, the game can become a blowout before halftime. A defensive touchdown or special-teams mistake would make the +32.5 far less comfortable.

Game Thesis: Florida State should control the game because it has superior talent at nearly every position and a favorable matchup against a New Mexico State offense that struggled badly to run the ball last season. The betting line is a separate question. The spread has climbed from roughly -28.5 to beyond -31, creating a large late-game cushion for an Aggies team with an experienced line and a veteran transfer quarterback.

New Mexico State Aggies vs Florida State Seminoles Best Bet - Spread: New Mexico State +32.5 (-115)

The Aggies are the better bet at the current price because the market has already charged heavily for Florida State's superiority. A 42-13 Florida State win would look completely dominant and still cash New Mexico State +32.5. That is the type of score distribution that becomes possible when the favorite can reduce tempo and substitute once the result is secure.

The ideal number is above 31. At +32.5, bettors are protected against several late scoring combinations that would be losses at +30.5. If the market falls back below +31, the handicap changes because the underdog loses the cushion created by the week's move.

The wager can fail quickly if New Mexico State cannot protect Hedden. Repeated sacks, turnovers or short fields would let Florida State build points without needing long drives. The projection assumes the Aggies produce enough first downs to consume clock and find at least two scoring possessions, while Florida State controls the game without maintaining maximum aggression for four quarters.

Prediction: Florida State 42, New Mexico State 13
