Youngstown State Penguins Open With Strong Offensive Showing

Youngstown State produced 484 yards in its 43-10 opening win over Mercyhurst, finishing with 232 passing yards and 252 on the ground. The Penguins built a 29-3 halftime advantage and held Mercyhurst from crossing midfield again until the fourth quarter. Quarterback Beau Brungard completed 20 of 29 passes for 232 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Youngstown State also generated several explosive runs, including a 50-yard gain by Jaden Gilbert.

Brungard was equally dangerous on the ground, rushing 21 times for 119 yards and two touchdowns. Gilbert added 89 yards and a score on only five attempts. Nine Penguins caught at least one pass, led by Antuan Gardner with 52 receiving yards. Youngstown State also intercepted Mercyhurst twice and allowed only 10 points. The competition becomes considerably stronger against Kentucky, but the Penguins arrive with a quarterback who accounted for five touchdowns and 351 total yards in the opener.

Kentucky Wildcats Try to Recover From Losing Season

Kentucky won three straight games late last season, beating Auburn 10-3, Florida 38-7 and Tennessee Tech 42-10 before the year ended poorly. The Wildcats lost 45-17 at Vanderbilt and were shut out 41-0 at Louisville in the finale. Kentucky finished 5-7 overall and won only two SEC games, missing a bowl after a difficult finish. Saturday provides the Wildcats with their first game of 2026 and a chance to establish better offensive production at Kroger Field.

Kentucky faces an immediate defensive challenge from Brungard, who showed against Mercyhurst that he can hurt opponents as both a passer and runner. Youngstown State produced 252 rushing yards in that victory and averaged more than six yards per rushing attempt. Kentucky will need to limit Brungard on designed runs and prevent Gilbert from breaking long gains. The Wildcats also need their offense to improve considerably from the final two games of 2025, when Kentucky scored only 17 combined points against Vanderbilt and Louisville.

Key to the Game: Beau Brungard Against Kentucky’s Defense

Brungard is the most important matchup in this game after his five-touchdown performance against Mercyhurst. The Youngstown State quarterback completed 69% of his passes while averaging eight yards per attempt and also averaged 5.7 yards on 21 carries. Kentucky has to keep Brungard from extending plays with his legs while limiting the short passing game that helped Youngstown State move the ball consistently. If Kentucky forces Brungard into obvious passing situations, the Wildcats can make this matchup much more difficult than the Penguins experienced in their opener.

Youngstown State vs Kentucky Game Pick

  • Youngstown State +23.5 (-115)

Youngstown State has enough offensive production to make 23.5 points valuable against a Kentucky team coming off a difficult 2025 season. Beau Brungard accounted for 351 total yards and five touchdowns in the Penguins’ opener, while Youngstown State produced 484 total yards. Kentucky finished 5-7 last season and scored only 17 combined points in its final two games. The Wildcats should have the stronger roster, but this spread requires separation. With Brungard creating problems as a passer and runner, the pick is Youngstown State +23.5 Saturday.

Youngstown State vs Kentucky Over/Under Pick

  • Under 62.5 (-110)

Youngstown State scored 43 points in its opener, but Kentucky represents a major rise in defensive competition after Mercyhurst. The Penguins also held Mercyhurst to 10 points, including only three through the first three quarters. Kentucky’s offense finished last season poorly, scoring 17 points at Vanderbilt before being shut out by Louisville. The Wildcats may produce better numbers against an FCS opponent, but reaching 63 points still requires significant scoring. With Kentucky’s recent offensive results creating concern, the play is under 62.5 at Kroger Field on Saturday afternoon.
