Houston Astros vs. New York Mets Picks and Prediction for Sunday August 30 2026

By: Garrett Beaverson Published 08/30/2026, 05:45 AM ET

The Houston Astros and New York Mets close out their three-game interleague series on Sunday, August 30, with both clubs looking to finish the weekend on a positive note. Houston entered the series holding first place in the AL West, while New York has been playing more competitive baseball recently despite falling well behind the playoff race.

The Astros came into the weekend at 68-67, while the Mets were 60-74 entering the series. Houston won the series opener 3-1 behind an excellent performance from Hunter Brown, but New York responded Saturday with a convincing 6-2 victory, evening the series heading into Sunday's finale.

The pitching matchup gives New York a particularly interesting advantage. The Mets will send Zac Thornton to the mound, while Houston counters with rookie Ethan Pecko. Thornton has been one of the more reliable young pitchers in the Mets' rotation, entering Sunday at 3-4 with a 2.88 ERA, 56.1 innings, 40 strikeouts and a 1.15 WHIP. Pecko, meanwhile, is still trying to establish himself after making his MLB debut earlier this month and enters with a 7.88 ERA and 1.88 WHIP through eight innings.

The matchup is especially intriguing because Houston remains in the thick of the AL West race, while New York has been playing better baseball than its overall record suggests. The Mets improved to 14-11 during August with Saturday's win, while the Astros fell to .500 at 68-68. Get in on all the action with our free MLB picks.

Astros: Yordan Alvarez Still Carrying an MVP-Caliber Offense

Houston has had an unusual season. The Astros are not running away with the American League West, but they remain in first place and have continued to receive extraordinary production from one of baseball's best hitters.

That player is Yordan Alvarez.

Alvarez enters Sunday's game with 37 home runs and 93 RBIs, while hitting .320 and leading the American League in batting average, home runs and RBIs. His 1.048 OPS also leads the majors, putting him firmly in the middle of the AL MVP conversation and giving Houston perhaps the most dangerous individual hitter in this matchup.

Alvarez's Saturday performance demonstrated exactly why opposing pitchers have so little room for error. He accounted for both Houston runs in the 6-2 loss, driving in a run with a sacrifice fly before launching his 37th home run of the season, a 436-foot shot that ended a 12-game homer drought.

The frustrating part for Houston is that Alvarez has not received enough consistent support around him.

The Astros have scored three or fewer runs in 12 of their last 19 games, creating enormous pressure on Alvarez to provide offense almost every night. His August numbers have remained impressive, including a .919 OPS, but Houston's overall offense has gone through stretches where one big swing is not enough.

That makes Sunday's matchup against Thornton particularly important.

Thornton has allowed just a 2.88 ERA in his first 10 MLB appearances, and the rookie left-hander has already demonstrated the ability to navigate major league lineups without giving away many free bases. His 1.15 WHIP is another indication that opponents have had difficulty consistently putting runners on against him.

Houston will need to attack Thornton early rather than allowing him to settle into a rhythm.

The Astros do have other weapons. José Altuve remains one of the team's most experienced offensive players, while Yainer Díaz has continued to provide power from the catching position. Díaz played a major role in Friday's 3-1 victory, contributing an RBI hit, while Daulton Varsho drove in two runs.

Houston's pitching staff is another major storyline.

The Astros entered this series dealing with rotation instability. Before Friday, Houston starters had gone 14 consecutive games without completing six innings, with the rotation producing a 5.64 ERA during that stretch. Hunter Brown finally stabilized things Friday by throwing 6.2 innings of one-run baseball and striking out 10 Mets.

That makes Pecko's start Sunday a major question mark.

The rookie has only two MLB starts under his belt and has allowed eight hits, seven earned runs and seven walks in eight innings. His 7.88 ERA and 1.875 WHIP are obviously concerning, although his limited sample means there is still considerable room for improvement.

Pecko's minor league track record provides a little more optimism. He went 4-6 with a 4.57 ERA, 86 strikeouts and a 1.33 WHIP over 82.2 minor league innings in 2026 before his promotion. The Astros clearly believe there is enough talent there to give him a major league opportunity.

The question is whether that talent shows up against a Mets lineup that just scored six runs Saturday.

Mets: Thornton Gives New York a Major Pitching Advantage

New York enters Sunday's finale with considerably more momentum than it had at the beginning of the series.

The Mets dropped three consecutive games before beating Houston on Saturday, but the 6-2 victory was one of their more complete performances of the month.

The offense produced 11 hits, while the pitching staff limited Houston to just four hits. Jared Young was the offensive star, recording three hits and three RBIs, including a two-run triple. Francisco Alvarez added a two-run double in the eighth inning to put the game out of reach.

The biggest development, however, was the return of Juan Soto.

Soto had missed five weeks with a calf injury before being activated Saturday, and he immediately made an impact. After fouling a pitch off his leg, Soto delivered a go-ahead RBI single in the fifth inning, giving the Mets a major offensive boost at exactly the right time.

His return gives New York another elite on-base and power threat in the lineup alongside Francisco Lindor.

Soto's season has been interrupted by injuries, but when healthy he has still produced a .229/.308/.407 slash line with 10 home runs and 23 RBIs in 57 games. More importantly for this particular matchup, he went .282/.338/.557 with six home runs and 11 RBIs in August before his return to the lineup.

That makes him an especially interesting player to watch against Pecko.

The rookie right-hander has allowed seven walks in just eight innings, which is a significant red flag against a Mets lineup that now has Soto and Lindor capable of extending at-bats and punishing mistakes.

But New York's biggest advantage is on the mound.

Thornton has quietly been outstanding.

The 24-year-old left-hander is 3-4 with a 2.88 ERA, 40 strikeouts and a 1.15 WHIP through 10 starts. He has pitched 56.1 innings, giving the Mets a legitimate chance to get into the middle innings with a lead.

His numbers are particularly impressive considering this is his first major league season. Thornton made his MLB debut on May 20 and has quickly established himself as one of the more dependable young arms on the Mets' staff.

The matchup against Houston is favorable because the Astros have shown a tendency to struggle when their lineup cannot create early traffic.

Yordan Alvarez is obviously capable of changing the game by himself, but Thornton's ability to limit baserunners means Houston may need to rely on Alvarez producing another solo homer or clutch extra-base hit.

New York's bullpen also enters this game in a better position after Nolan McLean threw seven innings Saturday, allowing just two hits and one unearned run. That allowed the Mets to avoid putting excessive stress on their relievers.

With Thornton potentially providing another six-plus innings Sunday, New York could enter the late innings with its bullpen in relatively good shape.

Astros vs. Mets Picks

  • Moneyline Pick: Mets

New York is the side we prefer entering Sunday's finale. The biggest reason is the pitching matchup. Thornton's 2.88 ERA and 1.15 WHIP are substantially better than Pecko's 7.88 ERA and 1.88 WHIP, and that gap gives the Mets a significant advantage over the first five or six innings. The Mets also enter with renewed confidence after Saturday's victory and the return of Soto.

Houston absolutely has the best individual offensive weapon in Alvarez, but New York has more reasons to expect consistent production throughout the lineup. Soto's return adds another elite bat, while Lindor and Francisco Alvarez give the Mets additional power.

The market has New York around -120 in the current available odds, with Houston at approximately +102, making the Mets a modest favorite. At that price, the Mets are worth backing.

  • Total Pick: Over 9 Runs

The total is where this game gets especially interesting. Thornton should give New York a strong start, but Pecko's early major league numbers create significant scoring potential for the Mets. Through his first two MLB starts, Pecko has allowed seven earned runs and seven walks over only eight innings. His 7.88 ERA and 1.88 WHIP make it difficult to project a shutdown performance against a lineup that now has Soto back in the order.

At the same time, it is extremely difficult to completely shut down Houston because of Alvarez. He enters with 37 homers and 93 RBIs and just hit his 37th homer Saturday. If Thornton makes even a couple mistakes, Alvarez has the power to put the Astros on the board quickly. The biggest concern for the Over is Thornton, who has been excellent all season. However, if the Mets can get to Pecko early, the game could turn into a bullpen contest, and that creates additional scoring opportunities. The current total is 9 runs, with the Over priced around -114 and the Under around -106. With Pecko's limited MLB experience, Soto's return and Alvarez's MVP-caliber season, I expect enough offense to push this game over the number.
